Senator Arlen Specter wants the Department of Veterans Affairs to quit using a handbook many are calling a guide to assisted suicide. Your Life, Your Choices is being pushed by the current administration. Some life advocates say the booklet devalues human life and pressures disabled veterans with a “hurry up and die” message. Jim Towey, director of the Bush administration’s Office of Faith-Based Initiatives, observed in The Wall Street Journal, “The document’s obsessed with death,” he said. “For this to be taxpayer-funded, and be the role of government, I find that wrong.”
