I was blessed with God-fearing parents who loved Christ, the church, and their children. My father taught me much about the Christian life and modeled his commitment with integrity in our home. His spiritual influence helped prepare me for life and ministry.
My mother also played an important role in my spiritual development, although she went about her task in a different way. Mom read to us each evening from a large Bible storybook kept in our bedroom. She knelt with us beside our beds as we learned to pray. She talked openly about her faith in God and her love for the Lord. She quoted Scripture verses and told us what they meant to her. She sang hymns as she prepared meals and worked around the house.
Years later, when I came home as a college student during breaks and weekend visits, Mom often stayed up that first night to ask questions about my schooling and the church I served. She seldom missed an opportunity during these late night conversations to express her pride and pleasure in my training for the ministry.
I’ll always be grateful for the spiritual impact my mother had on my life.
Timothy must have felt like that too. In Acts 16:1 Luke describes Paul’s first encounter with Timothy: “He came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a believer, but whose father was a Greek.” Timothy’s mother was a Christian but it appears his father was an unbeliever. His mother’s spiritual influence prevailed, however, since Luke describes Timothy as a disciple of Jesus Christ and adds, “The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him,” and that after meeting Timothy “Paul wanted to take him along on the journey” (vv. 2, 3).
Years later, after mentoring Timothy and sending him to teach and lead the church in Ephesus, Paul wrote, “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 Timothy 1:5).
Paul referred to Timothy as his spiritual son (1 Timothy 1:2), but he was careful to credit Timothy’s grandmother and mother for passing their faith along to him and nurturing him in his walk with Christ.
Godly mothers make a difference. I see it every week in the church I serve. I see mothers who make sure their children attend worship. I see mothers who bring their kids to Sunday school and drive them to youth activities. I see mothers who teach Sunday school and lead our children’s church program. Many of these moms pray regularly with and for their children, encouraging them to remain true to the Lord and to seek his wisdom in daily living.
I often wonder, though, if these Christian mothers, faithfully doing what they do day after day and week after week, realize the impact they’re having on their kids and on the kingdom of God. I suppose it would be easy to lose sight of that amid the daily—and seemingly endless—responsibilities of motherhood.
Today would be a good day to convey your appreciation to mothers you know. Sons and daughters, thank your mother for her love and influence. Husbands and fathers, express your gratitude to your wife for her friendship, her love, and her devotion to your family. Church members, compliment a young mother in your congregation for the way she cares for her family. Offer a word of encouragement to a single mom who’s raising her kids to love the Lord.
These keepers of the faith are making a difference. Let’s let them know we see and appreciate their efforts. |L
