“It was just before the Passover Feast” (John 13:1). Jesus was with his disciples in an upper room while the evening meal was being served.
Jesus knew he would soon be betrayed, falsely accused, and crucified. He knew he would soon suffer on the cross for the sins of the world. But in this darkest of hours, he also showed his followers what it means to be a servant.
John writes,
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him (vv. 3-5).
Foot washing was among the lowliest tasks a household servant could perform. Still it was the custom of the day and would have been expected by household guests. But who is responsible for such a task when the room is borrowed and comes with neither host nor servant? None of the disciples dared perform the task, fearing it would place him beneath the others in the room.
Jesus, however, didn’t hesitate to humble himself in order to serve. As he later indicated, he did it to set an example—for his disciples and for us.
Christ’s example wasn’t lost on the apostle Paul, and Paul wrote to make sure it isn’t lost on us:
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross! (Philippians 2:5-8).
How can we give expression to the kind of service Christ modeled?
We can serve our families. Sometimes it seems family members get not our best, but our worst when it comes to service. I’ve known Christians who would drop what they were doing at a moment’s notice to help another member of the church, but who would complain about—and perhaps even deny—a similar request by a member of their own family. Others were quick to forgive an offense committed by a member of the church, but would nurse a grudge for weeks if the same offense were committed by a family member. Serving Christ means giving our families our best.
We can serve our churches. “Serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13). Among other ways, we can serve our churches by regarding every member of the body of Christ with honor. We can respect the opinions of our Christian brothers and sisters. We can learn to see, value, and love others as Christ sees them, values them, and loves them.
We can serve our communities. On the job, in a restaurant, or at a sports complex, Christians are ambassadors for Christ. We are given opportunities daily to serve our communities by showing respect to coworkers, store clerks, waiters, and waitresses. We serve the Lord and others by honoring our kid’s coaches and respecting an umpire’s calls. We serve by participating in projects that benefit our communities. And when we do this as a church, our service shows others what it means to live for Christ.
When all is said and done, our service will bring rewards as well. One day we’ll hear the words every Christian worker longs to hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant. . . . Come and share your master’s happiness!” (Matthew 25:21). |L
