This issue of The Lookout concludes a three-part series on the Minor Prophets. Of the many themes we’ve considered in this series, one of the more prominent is the theme of redemption. Although God didn’t reveal all the details to them, the prophets pointed to a future day of salvation. Peter wrote,

Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things (1 Peter 1:10-12).

I doubt the prophets fully grasped the concept of salvation by grace when they wrote, but their writings help us appreciate it today. “And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it” (2 Peter 1:19).

The same can be said about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Of all the books that fall into the category of Minor Prophets, the book of Zechariah stands out for its many references to the coming Messiah. Zechariah’s name means “Whom the Lord remembers.” He worked alongside the prophet Haggai to call the Jewish people back to the work of God (Ezra 5:1; 6:14).

In addition to encouraging the Jews to complete the rebuilding of the temple, Zechariah pointed Israel to the coming of Christ. In fact, with the exception of Isaiah, the book of Zechariah contains more predictions about the coming Messiah than any other prophetic book.

Zechariah predicted that the Messiah would come as a gentle, peaceful king (Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:1-5). He predicted that Jesus would be betrayed by a friend (Zechariah 13:6; Matthew 26:21). More than 500 years before it happened, he prophesied that Christ would be sold for 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12, 13; Matthew 26:14-16). He described the coming Messiah as the Branch, a ruler, and a priest on his throne (Zechariah 6:12,13; Hebrews 4:14-16; 1 Timothy 6:15).

Zechariah pointed specifically to the cross. He foretold Jesus’ crucifixion (Zechariah 12:10; John 19:16-18, 24-28; Revelation 1:7). He described a fountain opened for cleansing from sin (Zechariah 13:1; Matthew 26:27-29; John 4:13, 14).

Along with the other Minor Prophets, Zechariah looked ahead to a day of redemption. We have the privilege of looking back upon it.

I’ve often wondered, though, just what men like Zechariah comprehended when they uttered their prophecies—prophecies that make perfect sense to us, but must have seemed cryptic and vague to them. Surely Zechariah understood what it meant to be wounded by a friend (Zechariah 13:6). But to be betrayed by a man you had hand picked to carry on the most important work in the world? The same might be said about the 30 pieces of silver thrown into the house of the Lord to the potter (11:12, 13).

No doubt the prophet understood what it meant to be pierced (12:10), but to be nailed to a cross and cut with a spear in order to bear the weight of the world’s sin?

I really don’t expect to know what the prophets thought when they wrote about Christ hundreds of years before he came to earth. But I’d like to. And someday I’ll ask them. |L
