I drive a 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck. In the nearly 10 years I’ve owned it, the sturdy little vehicle has carried me over 200,000 miles—mostly trouble free.
Why have I kept it so long? Once I heard a Christian financial expert say you get your money’s worth from a new car if you keep it at least 10 years. That was my goal when I bought the truck, and I’m close to achieving it.
I think about his statement occasionally as I’m rolling down the highway in my little green pickup. Of course, it won’t last forever and someday I’ll need to replace it. When that time comes, I’ll consider the financial expert’s advice once again and I’ll look to my little green pickup truck as the standard for my next purchase. It may be old, but it’s still a good roll model (pardon the pun).
The same might be said about role models. Many of us have Christian acquaintances we look up to and strive to imitate. That’s how it should be. But at the same time we shouldn’t neglect older role models—Christian men and women from the past who have lived exemplary lives of service and sacrifice.
I get together monthly with a good friend. Lately we’ve been reading and discussing biographies of Christian servants—men like David Brainerd, George Muller, and Hudson Taylor. The accounts of their devotion to God and the good work they did for the kingdom inspire me. These faithful followers expended themselves for the cause of Christ, sacrificing material gain and personal comfort in ways I’ve never experienced. Everything they did and said seemed to be governed by their love for God, their regard for his Word, and their compassion for the lost. They served the way their role model, Jesus Christ, served.
The 21st century has its share of good role models. But at times I feel I must look long and hard today to find Christians who have thoroughly crucified their egos. Christ-followers who serve with humility and are content with obscurity. Leaders who put others above themselves. Influencers who believe they’re here not to be served, but to serve. Believers who are passionate about holiness. Students who tremble at God’s Word.
Sadly, today’s Christian culture doesn’t always regard—or even tolerate—the kind of spirit Christ demonstrated in ministry. Some Christian leaders interpret external signs of success to mean they are exempt from the ancient Christian virtues of humility, service, kindness, and compassion. After all, God seems to be blessing their lives and ministries even when they haven’t given priority to these things.
But you and I know God cannot be fooled. He makes no exceptions to his call to holiness.
I don’t mean to judge. I’m little more than a fellow struggler who longs for contemporary examples of holy, godly, and blameless living. But I’m thankful that when I struggle to find modern examples, I can look to role models from the past—from King David to King Jesus. I look to David Brainerd who took the gospel to Native Americans. I look to George Muller who cared for thousands of orphans in Bristol, England. I look to Hudson Taylor who founded the China Inland Mission.
They may be old models, but they’re still good ones. |L
