People often ask us, “How’s retirement going?” Our answer in unison is “Great.” The reason we consider it great is because retirement gives us freedom to spend more time doing things we love, namely, serving Christ and his church.

Missions is a top priority and love in our lives. We see the great need of spreading the good news of Jesus Christ and are glad to serve on the mission team at our church. This team leads an active program. Leo serves as coordinator, a job that entails reading all the mission news, corresponding with missionaries, preparing the agenda for meetings, and writing the Mission News feature for our church paper. We also attend the National Missionary Convention each year where we serve on the Continuation Committee. A great learning experience for us was going on a short-term mission trip to Haiti.

Some of the other activities we are involved in include the Vermilion County (IL) Churches of Christ organization where Leo presently serves as president. This is an organization of about 25 churches in our county that meets monthly for edification and fellowship. We are getting ready for a big clothing drive this fall to collect clothing that will be shipped to Ukraine. Other places Leo enjoys serving include the steering committee of Pleasant Meadows Christian Village (a retirement home), and as Unit Commissioner of the Boy Scout Pack and Troop 390, which is sponsored by our church. Barbara is an active volunteer at the local crisis pregnancy center and together we have enjoyed hosting a small group Bible study in our home.

One might say, “You and Barbara have no time to enjoy retirement.” To us, serving is enjoyment. During the past eight years, we have been able to travel over much of this country. We keep a copy of the Directory of the Ministry in our van. Besides seeing many beautiful places, we have stopped at Bible colleges that were on our route and visited with many ministries and missions, often bringing back reports to the Mission Team.

We are grateful for these opportunities and we thank the Lord for the health to serve in these ways. Some of the needs take only a small amount of time to fulfill and others take a good deal of time. Big or small, we believe they are all important.

In our church, there are quite a number of retirees who continue to serve the lord in many ways. Several of these folks are well into their 80s. What good examples they are to us! When you love the Lord and realize he has taken care of you all these years (we are in our mid-70s), you can celebrate with the apostle Peter who wrote, “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10).

The retirement years give many of us the freedom to choose what we will do with our time. Opportunities for serving in his kingdom abound. Take a look around and plunge in. We believe serving is a good choice and it gives a great reason for getting up each morning! |L
