Jesus was in Capernaum on the Sabbath teaching. While he was in the synagogue a man who was possessed by a demon disrupted the service and cried out, acknowledging Jesus as “the Holy One of God” (Luke 4:34). Jesus amazed those present by commanding the demon to come out of the man.

From the synagogue Jesus went to Simon Peter’s home. Simon’s mother-in-law was there, suffering from a high fever. Jesus healed her.

With his teaching and traveling and healing, this must have been a busy Sabbath Day for Jesus. But his day wasn’t over. Luke tells us, “When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness” (v. 40). Mark reflects on the same event and elaborates. “That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door” (Mark 1:32, 33, emphasis added).

I wondered at first reading why the people waited until after dark to bring their sick to Jesus for healing; but then it occurred to me that it was the Sabbath Day, and many of them may have been restricted in their traveling by Sabbath regulations. Once the day ended at sunset, they could carry their sick beyond the limited distance of Sabbath travel to the home where Jesus was staying.

So following a full day of activity, Jesus was met after dark by an entire town of people who sought him for healing. Here’s where it gets interesting.

If Jesus were fatigued from his busy day, you might think he would stand at the front door, pronounce a general blessing on the entire town, heal everyone at once, and leave it at that. Every sick person who sought healing would have been happy with the outcome and would have spoken well of him.

But he didn’t do that.

Perhaps he would have compromised. Needing some time alone or a good night’s rest, Jesus could have quickly organized the sick into groups—the lame beside the door, the blind under a nearby tree, the demon possessed at a safe distance. Then he could have gone from group to group until all were healed. I imagine everyone would have been pleased with this outcome too.

But he didn’t do that.

Luke tells us what Jesus did. “When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them” (Luke 4:40, emphasis added).

Isn’t that remarkable? As tired as he may have been, as much as he may have longed for a little peace and quiet, a little “alone time,” Jesus waded right into the middle of this mass of people and healed each of their sick, one person at a time. Not only that, he laid his hands “on each one.” Every sick or demon possessed person healed that evening returned home with a story to tell. Each had a personal encounter with the Messiah.

I wonder if Jesus spoke to each person he healed, asking a name, inquiring about families, or perhaps uttering a simple word of encouragement. Scripture doesn’t provide the details, but such actions would have been consistent with his character and compassion.

I want to be more like him. I want to help the hurting in ways that preserve their dignity while providing for their needs. I want to be more inclined to forget about my schedule and my fatigue level when people are in want. When it’s appropriate, I want to get involved at a personal level so those who are helped can see Christ through me.
