In my English Standard Version Bible, just below the title “Psalm 100” is a line that reads, “A psalm for giving thanks.”

With its purpose clearly spelled out, Psalm 100 serves as a helpful guide for God’s people who want to express their gratitude to the Lord. It’s the perfect psalm for the Thanksgiving season.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! The psalmist begins by calling upon every member of the human race to praise the Lord. Honoring God is not the task of one race or nation. It is the duty of all God’s creation. Perhaps the psalmist’s expression “make a joyful noise” brought to mind the shouts loyal subjects made when their king ascended to the throne—expressions of joy, gratitude, and allegiance.

When you begin to comprehend how good God is to you, you can’t keep quiet about it. You look for ways to “make a joyful noise to the Lord.”

Serve the Lord with gladness! All our service to God, whether worship or any act of loving obedience, should be carried out with joy. True worship leads to service as true service leads to worship.

Worship is neither a chore nor an obligation to those who belong to God. Those who know him worship him and serve him gladly.

Come into his presence with singing! Singing was a vital element of worship in ancient Israel and the early church. The idea of singing while entering worship points to the worshiper’s joy and anticipation of the privilege of worship.

Because Christians have so many reasons to be joyful, our times of worship ought to be joyful times.

Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. As this is a call to “all the earth” to worship God, it makes sense that the psalmist would call upon all people, not just God’s covenant people, to acknowledge God as the only God—a God who has no equal. The psalmist offers four compelling reasons to acknowledge God as the only God: he created us (“It is he who made us”); he owns us (“we are his”); he identifies with us (“we are his people”); and he cares for us (“the sheep of his pasture”).

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise! When God’s people came to the temple courts to worship, they entered with expressions of thanksgiving and praise. Like ancient Israel and all who came before God in the temple courts, we should enter into worship thankful that we have been given such an incredible opportunity and filled with praise for the one who makes it possible.

Give thanks to him; bless his name! We enter worship with grateful hearts and praise on our lips. We continue in worship by thanking God and blessing (that is, speaking good of) his name. If we know the Lord, what else can we do?

For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. We don’t end our praise and thanksgiving to God when the worship service is dismissed. Our expressions of worship never end because his love and faithfulness to us never end.

The translators ended six of this psalm’s sentences with an exclamation point. Apparently they grasped from the text the psalmist’s joyful enthusiasm in praising and thanking the Lord.
