Have you ever deliberately disobeyed God thinking you would obey him later, when it really mattered? Have you ever rationalized a small act of disobedience, hoping that once you got out of whatever circumstance prompted your disobedience, you could simply move on, trusting God to put the past in the past?

God is a gracious God. When we bring our failures to him in repentance we can count on his forgiveness. Even so, he is not to be trifled with. He doesn’t take disobedience lightly. He is a God to be feared (Luke 12:5), a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29).

Nowhere in Scripture is this principle seen more clearly than in 1 Kings 13. The prophet introduced in this chapter is identified only as a man of God from Judah.

Responding to God’s call, the prophet stood before the altar at Bethel and denounced King Jeroboam’s idolatry, predicting the altar’s destruction under the future reign of King Josiah. When Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar commanding that the prophet be seized, God struck the king’s hand and it shriveled up. The king pleaded with the prophet to intercede for him. The man of God prayed and the king’s hand was restored.

In gratitude—or perhaps fear—the king offered gifts to the prophet and invited him to his home. The man of God refused because the Lord had given him a direct command not to eat bread or drink water or return by the way he came. So the prophet left the king’s presence and took a different road home.

On his return journey, however, he was met by an old prophet who heard about the incident at the altar. The old prophet invited the man of God to his home. Restating his orders from the Lord, the man of God declined. Undaunted, the old prophet lied, pretending an angel of God told him to bring the man of God back to his house. At that the man of God disregarded his divine orders and accompanied the old prophet to his home.

When he resumed his journey, the man of God was attacked by a lion and killed—God’s swift punishment for his disobedience. There’s more to the story, but I’d like to stop here to make a few observations. In spite of the previous good the man of God from Judah accomplished, only one thing mattered to God: obedience in the here and now.

His former reputation didn’t matter. Although he was known as a man of God, God noted his disobedience and exacted justice.

His previous faithfulness didn’t matter. Even though he went where God sent him and did what God instructed him, his final act of defiance brought God’s wrath.

God’s prior protection didn’t matter. God had protected him in a miraculous way at the altar, but withdrew his protection when he disobeyed.

His prayer life didn’t matter. There was a time when God heard his prayers and responded immediately and miraculously. But his prayer life couldn’t save him from God’s judgment.

His earlier steadfastness didn’t matter. He had kept to his course—for a while. Once he ignored it, he was in jeopardy.

His recent resistance to temptation didn’t matter. He had refused King Jeroboam’s offer and rejected the old prophet’s first attempt to deter him. But when he gave in, he paid the price.

In many ways the man of God from Judah was an honorable prophet. But his track record counted for nothing when he chose to disobey. He rejected the clear call of God and was punished for it.

It’s no different today. Let’s be grateful for grace. But let’s never forget that God expects obedience. All the time. Including today. |L
