Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in his commands. . . . He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. His heart is secure, he will have no fear (Psalm 112:1, 7, 8).

Psalm 112 describes the man whose fear of the Lord leads him to live a fearless life. Because he fears God, he doesn’t fear bad news or bad circumstances. He faces life steadfastly and securely.

It sounds promising, but how does it work?

It starts with our knowledge of God. When we see him as an omnipotent God who cares for his children, when we know he is for us (Romans 8:31), what’s left to fear? Jesus put it this way. “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). Giving God his rightful place in our lives alleviates our fears.

Still, how often do we allow fear to interrupt our work and witness for God? How often do we hesitate to do right because we fear misunderstanding, humiliation, rejection, or failure?

Someone said courage is nothing more than fear that has said its prayers. Paul wrote, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7, New Living Translation). If we believe God is greater than all our fears, we will have the strength and courage to do what honors God in every situation. Here are a few ways to express that fearlessness.

Mend a broken relationship. Are you at odds with a brother or sister in Christ? Are you not speaking to a family member because of a past offense? Make it right. Don’t be afraid. Read Matthew 5:23, 24. Then go and do as Jesus commanded. You may be rejected, perhaps even humiliated. But what is God’s best in this situation? “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18).

Help others achieve peace. When personality conflicts and differences of opinion arise, we can be quick to draw up battle lines and join opposing camps. When you see this happening at home, at work, or in the church, take the initiative to be a peacemaker. Even when it isn’t your battle. You may be misunderstood and resented. But if you do it with a pure heart and a desire to glorify God, you will be doing the right thing despite your fear.

Tackle a difficult task. Have you ever felt as if God were nudging you into an area of service that was beyond your reach? A ministry for which you sensed a great deal of urgency, but also one that seemed intimidating? Pray about it. Seek the counsel of trusted Christian friends. Then, if your passion for the task remains firm, take the risk.

Take a stand for God. Paul is our example here: “I am not ashamed of the gospel” (Romans 1:16). The next time you have an opportunity to speak up on God’s behalf, do it. Yes, you may be ridiculed or labeled a fanatic. But you also may be planting a seed that later produces a spiritual harvest.

When we keep our fears in perspective, we become useful tools in the hands of God. So what do you fear? If God is on your side, the answer should be nothing. “So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid” (Hebrews 13:6). |L
