Practice hospitality (Romans 12:13). Of all the things the Bible instructs us to do, hospitality should rate high on the easy list. How hard is it to prepare a meal for friends and family, or invite them over for a night of fun and laughter?

The first part of that verse seems to be the problem: “Share with God’s people who are in need.” Many of us find that can be daunting. It puts us in an awkward position.

The thought of hospitality is not new to me. I’m a preacher’s kid. We lived in the church parsonage and my dad’s office was in the house.

Church members were often in our home for counseling sessions, working around the yard, or just visiting. People stopped by without calling. Neighbors came over for pie and coffee just because it was a nice night. More than once we housed a guest speaker or missionary who came to town.

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some people have entertained angels without knowing it (Hebrews 13:2). My sisters and I found it hard to keep our house neat, especially when it was convenient to pile our books on the dining room table or leave our shoes where we took them off. It didn’t seem that important to us; after all it was our home. (Even if our guests were angels, I didn’t think they would mind a stray shoe or two!)

Mom had a different theory about the house. It was always neat, clean, and tidy. Nothing was out of place. The pillows on the couch were in their proper spots and the curtains hung straight without a wrinkle. Our coats were in the closet, our shoes were in our bedrooms, and the dining room table, clear of books, displayed a beautiful centerpiece.

Mom kept an extra roast in the refrigerator, potatoes and onions in the bin, carrots in the crisper, a pie in the freezer, and coffee in the cupboard—just in case we had unexpected visitors.

Our door was always open. Now I know why my mother insisted we keep the house straightened up at all times.

Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling (1 Peter 4:9). My two sisters and I have not retained my mom’s lessons on keeping the house ready for visitors. We like the “lived in” look. Each of us is hospitable—but in our own way.

One of my sisters always puts out towels on the bed and a basket of toiletries in the room where her guests are staying. I appreciate that because there have been many times I have forgotten my shampoo.

My other sister doesn’t mind if her house is in order or if dishes are piled in the sink; visiting with her guests is what’s important. She opens her home at any time under any circumstances. I never have to wait for it to be neat and in order.

Then there’s me. I love to entertain guests but I get uptight about it. I grumble the whole time I’m preparing for them, taking half the fun out of having them over. When someone is coming to my house, it has to be cleaned top to bottom. I have four levels of clean: sister clean, friends clean, mother-in-law clean, and mother clean (that’s the one that kills me!).

My mother is in her 80s now and still keeps her home immaculate, always ready to host friends and family. She is the only person I know who changes her curtains with the seasons and washes them when they are down. My dad is gone now, but my mom would still share her food with you and give you a place to rest if you stopped by.

When I read verses about hospitality in the Bible, my mother will always be the first person I think about. Maybe some day I can be as hospitable as her—except I probably won’t change the curtains! |L
