His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation (Luke 1:50).

I was a student minister with a rural congregation in southeastern Indiana when I first met Terry and Cynthia Griffith. A young married couple with three small children, Terry and Cynthia entered our church and immediately immersed themselves in the study of the Word. Before long, both were baptized into Christ and became actively involved in ministry.

That was more than three decades ago.

So you can imagine my pleasant surprise three years ago when Terry and Cynthia came to worship with the church I serve in Milan, Indiana. Soon they were joined by their son Travis, his wife Amy, and their children, Trayton and Kinsley.

The Griffith families worshiped faithfully with us for several months. Then one Sunday morning following the invitation, both families—three generations in all—came forward. Terry, Cynthia, Travis, and Amy placed their membership with our church. Nine-year-old Trayton confessed his faith in Christ and was baptized into him.

It isn’t often I have the privilege of welcoming three generations of one family into the church on the same day, so this was a special occasion—for me, for our church family, and for the Griffiths.

Some months later the families were joined in worship by another son, Brandon, his wife Jessica, and their two small children, Aiden and Carson. Having such a strong intergenerational group of believers in our church has been a tremendous blessing.

When I travel by car for ministry engagements, I often invite men from our church to join me. Terry traveled with me on several occasions. During those long hours in the car, Terry warmed my heart with his talk about his wife, his children, and their families. It was hard for me to imagine a Christian man who had more love and respect for his family than Terry did. And he did more than talk about it. He demonstrated it daily.

Last fall, Terry, who had battled Multiple Sclerosis for years, became very ill while visiting relatives in another state. He fought valiantly against the disease and its complications, but in the end he succumbed and passed into eternity.

I preached Terry’s funeral. I spoke about his faith in Christ, his love for his family, and his devotion to the church. I talked about the spiritual impact he had on his wife, his children, and his grandchildren—how two subsequent generations belong to Christ today because of his faithfulness, example, and leadership.

Young Trayton spoke at the funeral, too. He stood before the crowd of adults and talked about his grandfather’s love for the Lord. He challenged us not to be angry at God for his grandfather’s death, but to realize that God has plans and purposes we do not know. That we should simply trust him to carry out his will in our lives.

Trayton will be a minister of the gospel one day. He reads his Bible faithfully. He and I are working on a sermon he’ll preach soon on a Sunday evening in our church. Trayton has many people to thank for the spiritual direction he’s received in his young life. He’s part of a loving church family. He has two wonderful Christian parents who teach and model the Christian life daily in his home. He’s blessed with an uncle, an aunt, and a grandmother who also help guide him in his understanding of Scripture and the Christian life.

And he has been influenced by a godly grandfather who, above all things, prayed that the third generation of his family would embrace Christ as the first and second generations have done. |L
