Perhaps you’ve heard someone say, “If you find the perfect church, don’t join it. You’ll ruin it!”
I understand the sentiment, but I doubt any of us has to worry about finding the perfect church—in that sense of the word. As long as the church is populated with people (and it always will be because the church is the people) it will be an imperfect gathering.
But looking at it another way, we might say the church can be perfect. At least the apostle Paul believed it could. He wrote to the church in Colosse, “We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me” (1:28, 29).
Is it possible? Can Christians—and the congregations they belong to—be perfect? This is certainly true in an “end time” sense, when we will be made perfect forever in the presence of the Lord. But there is another sense we may consider as well. When Paul writes about his desire to “present everyone perfect in Christ” he uses the Greek word teleion, referring, among other things, to the place in life where we reach the proper levels of virtue and integrity, of understanding and goodness.
Seen this way, it’s possible for a church to be a perfect church—if its people are striving to become mature and complete in Christ. Perhaps that’s what Paul meant when he challenged the Corinthian church to “aim for perfection” (2 Corinthians 13:11).
But what does “perfect” look like?
Perfect churches seek to glorify God in their decision-making. Paul reminded the Christians in Ephesus that they were called to live “for the praise of [God’s] glory” (1:12). Decision makers in perfect churches pass their plans and activities through the filter of God’s glory. Ironically, their decisions may not always be perfect, but they will stem from a heartfelt desire to glorify God.
Members of perfect churches use their gifts and talents to serve one another and build up the body of Christ. They understand that “to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7). They use the gifts they have been given “to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10).
In addition to decision-making and service, members of perfect churches strive to glorify God in their personal lives. Paul prayed that the Christians in Philippi would be “filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God” (1:11). In the congregation I serve, we talk often about what it means to be a church filled with people who behave like Jesus Christ. We want to demonstrate his love, grace, mercy, compassion, forbearance, and forgiveness to one another and to a watching world. We’re convinced the most effective evangelistic tool a congregation possesses is the transformed lives of its members. We want people to see Christ in our lives.
Is your church a perfect church? Are your leaders seeking to glorify God in the decisions they make? Are the members of your church selflessly serving one another and the community? Do they behave toward their families, church members, and those outside the church in ways that bring honor to the Lord?
What about you? Are you doing your part to help your church become a perfect church? Do you support your leaders as they seek to make wise and godly decisions? Are you using the gifts God has given you to serve others? Do those who know you see Christ in your life?
