Memorial Day is a time to remember the men and women who died serving our country—valiant soldiers who fought faithfully to protect and preserve the freedoms we enjoy in America. We owe a great debt of gratitude to them and to those around the globe today who continue to serve in this honorable way.

We often say those who gave their lives to serve their country have made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s hard to imagine a greater cost than the cost they and their families incurred. As a nation and as Christians we must never forget them or the price they paid.

The high cost of their sacrifice reminds us that following God also involves sacrifice. The conclusion of the second book of Samuel offers helpful insight into this. In this account God became angry with the nation of Israel and incited King David against them. Acting contrary to the advice of his army commanders, David ordered that all the fighting men of Israel be counted. The project took nearly 10 months to accomplish and the resultant census showed the nation had 1,300,000 fighting men at its disposal.

When the census was completed, David realized he had made a foolish decision and sinned against God, perhaps by placing more confidence in the number of soldiers and the strength of his army than in God himself. (I also view this account as a lesson in how God sovereignly uses even our weaknesses and sinful tendencies to accomplish his will.)

As a result of David’s actions God sent a plague throughout Israel killing 70,000 people. In an appeal to God’s mercy and at the direction of the prophet Gad, David went to the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. When David revealed his plans to build an altar to God there, Araunah offered to give David the threshing floor, oxen, and wood for the sacrifice.

David refused Araunah’s generous offer by saying, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing” (2 Samuel 24:24). So David purchased the threshing floor and the oxen, built an altar, and made sacrifices to God. The account concludes with, “Then the lord answered prayer in behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped” (24:25).

King David understood that every true sacrifice comes with a cost. The lesson shouldn’t be lost on us.

Christians must not allow a consumer-driven culture to influence the church. But sadly, sometimes it does. Some church members view themselves primarily as consumers of the church’s goods. We want a certain style of music, a certain temperature in the auditorium, a certain sermon length, and a certain number of visits in homes and hospitals. When our consumer-driven needs are not met to our expectations we criticize, complain, and even withdraw. We’re not entirely opposed to sacrifice. We just want it on our terms. But sacrifice on our terms is no sacrifice at all.

So as we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country this weekend, let’s also remember the call to sacrificial living Jesus issued to his disciples: “Anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple” and “Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27, 33).

Let’s be willing to make the sacrifices Christ calls us to make in order to follow him. Let’s die to self and live for his glory. Let’s put the needs of every other member of the body of Christ before our own. Let’s work hard to advance God’s kingdom. Let’s say, “No matter the cost, I am willing to pay the price in my service to Christ.” |L
