The farther my Christian journey takes me and the longer Ree and I are married, the more I want to be the best husband I’m capable of being. I have two reasons for making this commitment: My wife deserves it and God expects it.
I want to love her as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25). Jesus laid down his life for the church. I want to express a similar sacrificial, self-denying love for my wife. I want to put her first. I want her to know she’s the most important person in the world to me—the one person I choose to be with above all others. I want to tell her and I want to show her.
I want to be considerate toward her and treat her with respect (1 Peter 3:7). I don’t have any trouble treating members of the church I serve with respect. I try to be gracious in our conversations, polite in our disagreements, and affirming in our relationships. As important as it is that I show respect to others in the church, it’s even more important that my wife receive the same respectful treatment from me in our home and in public.
I want to keep her best interests at heart (Philippians 2:3, 4). I want to be concerned with what is best for her. On a very practical note, I don’t want to be the kind of husband who expects his wife to tag along with him to the things he’s interested in but doesn’t feel the need to reciprocate when it comes to things that interest her. I want her to know that I value the things she values.
I want to bear with her and forgive her as the Lord forgave me (Colossians 3:13). My wife puts up with my many faults and loves me in spite of them. She doesn’t complain about my schedule—even when we have to work around previously made family plans to handle ministry emergencies. She makes ministry much easier for me. I want to do something similar for her. I want her to know she doesn’t have to be perfect (in my eyes or in the eyes of others) to gain my approval—that I love her simply for who she is. And if she ever offends me, I want to forgive her immediately and completely, as the Lord forgave me.
I want to be gentle in all my dealings with her (Colossians 3:19). If we’re not careful, we can spend our energies giving our best to people at work and church, leaving little reserves for those we’re closest to. I want to avoid that error and instead treat my wife with more deference and respect than anyone else (although I still want to treat others with a great deal of the same). I want her to feel safe in my presence, not fearing that my temperament might suddenly change or that I might respond to an innocent comment of hers with a harsh or critical remark. I want to be careful with her feelings and emotions.
I want to grow in grace and knowledge with her (2 Peter 3:18). I’ve seen the marriage relationship illustrated by a simple triangle. One of the lower corners of the triangle represents the husband; the other represents the wife. God is represented as the apex of the triangle. As the lines from the lower corners merge toward the apex, they also move closer to one another. That’s how it is with a husband and wife who put Christ first. The closer each draws to him, the closer they also draw to one another.
That’s what I want: to draw closer to my wife as she and I draw closer to Christ. |L
