This issue of The Lookout concludes our four-part series “Meet the Major Prophets” with a look at the prophet Daniel. You’ll read about Daniel’s devotion to God and his commitment to personal integrity. You’ll get a glimpse into the trials he faced and the victories he won.

Even as a young man Daniel demonstrated remarkable faith and determination—and God honored him for it. Here are a few things I’ve learned from this exceptional servant of God.

Uncompromising obedience invites divine favor. As a young deportee, Daniel resolved not to do anything to defile himself in the eyes of God—even when it meant standing up to the Babylonian officials who ruled over him. His refusal to eat the royal food and wine could have been viewed as rebellion and insubordination, but instead it seems to have been received as Daniel intended, an earnest plea to maintain his integrity.

Why did his captors listen to him? The answer is found in Daniel 1:9: “Now God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel.” God honored Daniel’s devotion by affecting the heart of the Babylonian official who supervised him.

It had happened before: “But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden” (Genesis 39:20, 21).

God is sovereign and can turn a heart—any heart—at will. Not even the most powerful ruler is exempt. As the writer of Proverbs observes, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases” (Proverbs 21:1).

I don’t believe Daniel took his stand knowing that God had sovereignly affected the heart of the Babylonian official. I believe he stood firm because he wanted to honor God regardless of the cost, and God honored Daniel’s obedience by bringing him into favor with his superiors.

Daniel’s story makes me wonder how often we miss out on God’s sovereign intervention in our lives because we lack integrity, cut corners, or fail to take a stand for him. And how much more favor we might receive if we chose always to do things God’s way.

Uncompromising obedience yields immeasurable blessings. God had a plan for Daniel and his three companions. They remained faithful to the Lord in a foreign land and as a result, “to these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds” (1:17). I’d like to think that as God looked into the hearts of these four young Jewish men, he saw the depth of their devotion and blessed them with everything they needed to do the work he had for them to do.

We may not receive that kind of knowledge and understanding today, but the blessings God poured out on Daniel and his friends underscore the fact that God stands ready even today to bless those who are fully committed to him.

Uncompromising obedience produces lasting influence. Daniel’s influence has extended far beyond his lifetime. His prophetic ministry is chronicled in an inspired book that bears his name. God himself offered this lasting tribute to the prophet: “Son of man, if a country sins against me by being unfaithful and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its men and their animals, even if these three men—Noah, Daniel and Job-—were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign Lord” (Ezekiel 14:13, 14).

To be singled out by God as one of the most righteous men in history is indeed a great honor—an honor that recognizes uncompromising obedience. |L
