This issue of The Lookout focuses on “Parenting the Special Needs Child.” The articles in this issue provide practical, biblical guidelines for parenting children with physical, emotional, and mental disabilities. We’ll also consider ways individuals and churches can minister to families of special needs children.

We often regard family members of special needs children as heroes of sorts. We admire their love and devotion, their sacrificial spirits, their hearts of service. We value their unrelenting patience and faithfulness.

Most of those folks will tell us they’re not heroes at all. They’re just doing their jobs, like any family member would. Many will add that they consider themselves blessed by God to have been entrusted with their special needs children and can’t imagine life without them.

Raising a child with special needs can’t be easy. The emotional strength, physical endurance, and patient attention required of these caregivers must be exacting at times. Even so, I know many Christian parents of special needs children who go about their daily tasks with joy, peace, and gratitude. What is at the root of their selfless service?

It begins with the compassion of our heavenly Father. The psalmist wrote, “The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion” (Psalm 116:5). God’s compassion extends to our physical as well as spiritual condition. From a spiritual perspective he is patient with us, wanting none of us to perish apart from him (2 Peter 3:9). From a physical perspective, he looks upon the helpless and responds with empathy: “The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow” (Psalm 146:9). As the prophet Isaiah wrote, “The Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion” (Isaiah 30:18).

It extends to the compassion of our Savior. Compassion was a hallmark of Jesus’ earthly ministry. “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36). Responding to the cries of two blind men near the city of Jericho, “Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him” (Matthew 20:34). He acted similarly toward a desperate leper: “Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!’” (Mark 1:41).

It ends in the compassion of God’s people. As we grasp God’s compassionate nature and identify with Christ’s compassionate ministry, we who belong to the Lord are compelled to live lives of compassion as well. Paul instructed the church to “Be kind and compassionate to one another” (Ephesians 4:32). He added, “as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion” (Colossians 3:12). Peter calls us to “love as brothers, be compassionate and humble” (1 Peter 3:8).

Acts of compassion come naturally to followers of Christ. That’s why Christian parents of special needs children often seem to fulfill their roles with such joy and gratitude. They are simply doing what comes naturally to those who are filled with God’s Spirit. Unlike many of us, they may need to keep the compassion switch turned on 24/7. But thankfully they serve a God who provides the strength and endurance to do whatever needs to be done in his name and for his glory. After all, he is “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God” (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4). |L
