We’ve titled this issue of The Lookout “The Church on the Move” to challenge Christians and congregations to plan strategically and move forcefully to advance God’s kingdom on earth. You’ll find some excellent resources in these pages to encourage you in this task.
In his insightful article “Moving Day: From Apathy to Action,” writer Alan Dowd reminds us that God has used men and women of action throughout history—from Old Testament patriarchs like Noah, Abraham, and Moses to New Testament figures like Christ and the apostles—to accomplish his work. Alan reminds us that we are cut from the same cloth, that you and I also have been called to action in our service to God.
When Kathleen Trissel found herself doing ministry outside the parameters of her spiritual gifts and interests, she had to step back, reevaluate her calling, and come to grips with her personal service to Christ. She wrote “Flourishing Within the Boundaries” to challenge us to seek God’s will for our ministries before jumping headlong into areas we may not be gifted to pursue.
Corporate leaders and motivational experts around the world refer to author and speaker Tony Jeary as “Mr. Presentation.” A committed Christian, Tony recently released his 38th book, Purpose-Filled Presentations, through Standard Publishing. Written to help any Christian communicate more effectively for Christ, Purpose-Filled Presentations provides a framework to help you improve the way you share your Christian testimony, conduct a worship service, lead a small group, teach with impact, and much more. In today’s issue of The Lookout we’ve excerpted a segment from a chapter in Tony’s book titled “Create Great First Impressions” to challenge churches to communicate Christ’s love to visitors in ways that will encourage them to return.
I began an interim preaching ministry with the Church of Christ in Milan, Indiana 10 years ago, three months after taking a position with Standard Publishing. I had been preaching at the church for several months when the leaders approached me and asked if I would consider officially becoming the church’s minister. I declined. Although I loved preaching and had already grown to love the people, I was concerned about the amount of time I had to devote to the church while working another full-time job.
Some months later (after several additional offers), the leaders came to me with this proposal: “If you’ll become our preacher, you can tell us what you have time to do and we’ll do the rest.”
True to their word, the good folks at the church I serve have kept their promise for the last decade. As I continue to work full-time at Standard Publishing, they have worked tirelessly to carry out the work of the ministry at the local level. As a result of their hard work, positive attitudes, and unflagging faith, our church has experienced a 400 percent increase in attendance and giving over the last 10 years. We’re developing a solid reputation in the community as a church that cares about people. Our volunteer-led youth program is the talk of the town. We’re currently expanding our educational facilities and have plans to erect a new worship center in the near future. And God has blessed us with a number of gifted young men who are preparing for future leadership roles.
Shared victories like these come about only through God’s blessings and the hard work of his people. When the membership is mobilized, there is no end to what God can do in the local church.
As our Lord himself said, “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it” (Matthew 11:12). |L
