Today's issue of The Lookout is the third in a series on “Silent Sufferers.” This week we’re addressing insecurity and inadequacy—feelings every believer succumbs to from time to time.

Have you ever felt compelled to do something for Christ and the church, but were hesitant to take on the task because you didn’t feel equal to it? If so, you’re in good company.

Called upon by God to deliver Israel from Egyptian captivity Moses responded, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11). Even after God demonstrated his miraculous power to the reluctant leader and eliminated every excuse he offered, Moses still begged, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it” (4:13).

When God explained that he had been set apart before birth and appointed a prophet to the nations, a hesitant Jeremiah responded, “Ah, Sovereign Lord . . . I do not know how to speak; I am only a child” (Jeremiah 1:6).

Faced with the overwhelming responsibility of leading the nation of Israel in the shadow of his great father-king, Solomon replied, “But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties” (1 Kings 3:7). Here, however, is where Solomon distinguished himself from others who were commissioned by God but felt inadequate to live up to their calling. He acknowledged his inadequacy, but he also recognized that God could make him adequate for the task: “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (v. 9).

Solomon struck the proper balance. He recognized his inadequacy while acknowledging God’s adequacy. He admitted his insecurity and found security in his heavenly Father.

We can learn from him.

What would you like to do for God? Would you like to teach a Sunday school class? Lead a youth group? Preach a sermon? Volunteer to direct Vacation Bible School? Would you like to disciple young people at a Christian service camp? Go on a short-term mission trip? Would you like to become a deacon or elder in your church? Launch a ministry in your community? Write a book?

If inadequacy and insecurity are keeping you from ministries like these, consider what the apostle Paul wrote: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). God can store a lot of treasure in a clay jar. We simply need to ask him to, and be ready to receive what he gives.

Later in the same letter Paul wrote about his sufferings and his earnest prayers to God to alleviate them. When God chose not to respond as Paul requested, the Lord reminded him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (12:9). In one sense, the weaker we are, the greater the display of God’s power in our lives when we do his will.

Remember this the next time you feel God calling you to take on a ministry. It’s not about your inadequacy. It’s about God’s adequacy and his power to work through a willing vessel, no matter how weak.

The ministry you’re considering may be new to you. It may seem intimidating and outside your comfort zone. It may involve risk. But if you believe God is calling you to the task, acknowledge your concerns, look to him for help, and remind yourself, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). |L
