Do we really mean it when we say, “May all that is within me bless the Lord”? Or do we find within ourselves a mixture of faith and fear, worship and worry, determination and doubt? Along with fired-up hearts, the body of Christ contains some cold feet.

Yet, whole-hearted devotion is the biblical standard. Scripture says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23, 24).

The Bible calls us to be fully engaged—to serve the Lord in every activity and every situation. He’s Lord in the classroom, the boardroom, and the bedroom. He’s Lord on Sunday morning and on Wednesday afternoon. He’s Lord in the wee hours of the morning and the weary hours of the night.

He’s Lord in the garage, the factory, and the farm. He’s Lord of the soccer field and the shopping mall, Lord of the workplace and the vacation spot. Whatever we do, he’s in charge.

The ancient Jews rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem in record time because “the people worked with all their heart” (Nehemiah 4:6). The church in Antioch thrived and grew when Barnabas encouraged the believers “to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts” (Acts 11:23).

Football players can’t score half a touchdown or half a field goal; they either cross the goal line or they don’t. In the Christian life, we can’t afford to drift like a log on a river swept along by the current. We must keep rowing, pressing on with all our hearts toward the upward call of God.

How would we complete our school assignments if we placed our finished homework in the Master Teacher’s hands? If we were groundskeepers for the Creator’s garden, how would we tend the flowers and grass? If Jesus coached our team, how would we treat the other players and the referees? How would we use our musical skills if the Lord sat in the front row listening to our performance?

If Jesus put us in charge of his sheep, wouldn’t we feed them well and protect them from harm? How will we care for the church, knowing that Jesus is the Good Shepherd, the Pastor of the pastors, the Master of the ministers, and the head of the body? “It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:24).

As someone has said, “The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” The reward for wholehearted commitment won’t be money or fame, a diploma or a gold watch. The inheritance we receive from the Lord will come with his words of commendation: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

A car won’t run if it’s halfway in gear. A plane won’t fly if it only has one wing. And it’s hard to walk with the Lord if we have one foot on the road to Heaven and the other on the path to Hell. It’s time for God’s people to be completely devoted to him, fully engaged in the work he’s called us to do. |L
