President of the Family Research Council (FRC) Tony Perkins is speaking out against a lawsuit filed in Massachusetts disputing the constitutionality of the federal definition of marriage established by the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996.
“Back in 1996, most pro-family Americans were relieved to know that the institution of marriage had been protected by the Defense of Marriage Act,” said Perkins. DOMA also protected the states’ rights by restricting the people with same-sex “marriage” licenses to demand recognition in another state.
Thirteen years later DOMA may be unable to stand strong against activist groups like Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), as well as President Obama’s stand on this issue. He has repeatedly stated his support for DOMA’s repeal.
Another issue concerning the lawsuit is the impact same-sex marriages will have on children. “Even more important are the implications for marriage and family. Social science confirms what history and common sense have long told us: that the best environment for children is a home with a mom and dad,” said Perkins. “DOMA is necessary, as is a Federal Marriage Amendment, to ensure a solid future for traditional marriage in this country and the well-being of our children.”
