Despite the economic downturn, religious organizations saw a 5.5 percent increase in donations last year, according to Giving USA Foundation. Last year was the second year in a row that giving to religious organizations topped $100 billion, and that total charitable giving topped $300 billion. That said, overall charitable giving reported a slight decrease in 2008, largely because of a 4.5 percent decrease in corporate giving.
