The Uniform Lesson for July 5
Background & Commentary by Sam E. Stone
This month’s lesson theme, “Called to Be God’s People,” contains two lessons based on Deuteronomy and two based on Leviticus. This first lesson has particular significance, as Gary Hall explains: “Since covenant preceded law, it was important that Moses begin with a statement about the covenant before getting to law. Therefore, the first verses in this section (Deuteronomy 1:1-5) provide the setting for the Decalogue.” Deuteronomy is the last book in the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible). The word Deuteronomy literally means “the law repeated.”
The Covenant Recalled/Deuteronomy 5:1-6
Moses called all of the people together before they were to cross over into the promised land. Originally God made the covenant with the patriarchs (4:31); it was reaffirmed with the children of Israel at Mount Sinai (Horeb). Those gathered on that occasion represented the generations that would follow—including this one. Most of the original group who left Egypt had died during their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. Only those 20 years of age and younger would be allowed to enter Canaan with Joshua and Caleb (Numbers 14:29-35).
Moses was about to die on Mount Nebo. As their longtime leader, he reminded them how and when God made his covenant with them. That covenant was with all of us who are alive here today (Deuteronomy 5:3). He described the awesome sight on Mount Sinai when the Lord entrusted him with the Ten Commandments. In the Hebrew Bible they are referred to simply as “the ten words” (Exodus 34:28). They stand as God’s direct orders for all Israelites. Hear, O Israel (Deuteronomy 5:1) includes the idea of obedience.
The Laws Repeated/Deuteronomy 5: 7-9a, 11-13, 16-21
The Decalogue as recorded here is slightly different in some details than the earlier version (Exodus 20:1-17). One Bible teacher refers to this passage as an exposition of the law. The first commandment—You shall have no other gods before me (Deuteronomy 5:7)—underlies all the rest. Jehovah is the one absolute God. No other “god” can be compared to him. His uniqueness has been established (see 4:33-35, 39). Since this is true, it follows that no idol should be treated as if it were God (v. 8). Jesus declared that loving God with all one’s heart is the first and great commandment (see Matthew 22:37-40).
When Moses said, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God” (Deuteronomy 5:11), the command includes not making false or empty oaths. Neither was God’s name to be misused for personal gain. Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy is the fourth commandment, reminding the Jews that, by historic precedent, the seventh day of the week has special significance. This was a day to celebrate both divine creation and divine redemption.
G. T. Manley observed that “[the] fifth commandment deals with the most sacred of human relationships, that of parenthood. . . . Men choose their own friends, but parents are the gift of God, his instruments in bringing them to birth, a ministry which has no parallel.” The command to honor one’s parents carries with it a unique promise—long life (see Ephesians 6:2). When children show respect and honor to parents, this pleases God. A long life in the promised land is contrasted with a difficult life in the land of slavery, from which they had just been delivered.
The following five commandments include specific directions on proper relationships with other people. These form the backdrop for laws that have been established throughout the Western world over the centuries.
The NIV correctly translates v. 17, “You shall not murder.” The prohibition was against premeditated killing, not just any killing. There were times in which God commanded the death of criminals—for those guilty of murder (Exodus 21:12) and other capital offenses (Exodus 21:15-17).
Adultery refers to sexual relations between a man and woman, when at least one of them is married to another. The marriage relationship is often used to symbolize God’s relation with his chosen people. When the people were unfaithful to their vows, it was considered spiritual adultery (see Hosea 2; Jeremiah 2-3; Ezekiel 16, 23).
The final commandment differs from the first nine in that it warns against one’s inner desires. Jesus noted that all sin begins in the heart—whether adultery, murder, or stealing (see Matthew 15:18, 19; Proverbs 4:23). Rather than desiring what belongs to another, the child of God needs to be satisfied with what has been provided, trusting the heavenly Father to continue giving what is needed. These are God’s rules. It is our responsibility to accept and obey them. |L
