The Uniform Lesson for November 23
Background & Commentary by Sam E. Stone

Timothy was like a son to Paul (1 Corinthians 4:17). He first appeared on the scene in Acts 16:1-3, when he was just a teenager. He traveled alongside Paul much of the time in the years that followed. When Paul wrote the letter we call 2 Timothy, it was not long before his death in Rome. This warm, personal letter not only gives eternal principles for church leaders, but also shows the affection of an older Christian for his protÈgÈ (1 Timothy 1:2).

Leaders Who Last/2 Timothy 2:1-3

Verse 1. You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. In view of the individuals who have just been mentioned, Timothy should be warned by those who have defected (2 Timothy 1:15-17) and encouraged by the faithfulness of Paul and Onesiphorus
(v. 16). God does not give fear, but power (v. 7).

Verse 2. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. Paul had discipled Timothy; now he was to do the same with others. This is the biblical pattern for leadership training both at home and abroad. To entrust the message suggests giving a valuable commodity to a trusted person who can keep it safe and secure.

Verse 3. Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Paul often describes the Christian life in military terms (1 Corinthians 9:7; 2 Corinthians 10:3, 4; 1 Timothy 1:18). In the verses that follow he expands on this illustration of a soldier. Next he suggests two other comparisons—an athlete and a farmer.

Leaders Who Are Grounded/2 Timothy 3:14-17

Verses 14, 15. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. The false teachers have chosen one course (2 Timothy 3:1-13); Timothy needs to go the opposite way. You have learned God’s Word. Stand firm on that rock, no matter who tries to move you. You were taught by both your mother and your grandmother (1:5), as well as Paul himself (3:10, 11). Note that salvation does not come simply by knowing Scripture, but by embracing it through faith in Christ.

Verse 16. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. Both the Old and New Testament are literally “inspired,” God-breathed. What these God-directed writers composed is the infallible Word of God (2 Peter 1:20, 21). As such, it is capable of doing various things—teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. Two of these actions relate to doctrine; two to practice.

Verse 17. . . . so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. All of the transforming power of the Bible is designed for one purpose—to completely equip each believer for service to the Lord (see 2 Timothy 2:21).

Leaders Who Are Faithful/2 Timothy 4:1-5

Verse 1. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge. God is the ultimate, eternal judge of everyone. The aging warrior’s solemn charge to his young lieutenant is given in the firm expectation of Christ’s glorious return.

Verse 2. Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. These five exhortations are still appropriate for Christian ministers today. Any time is the right time to proclaim God’s truth (Ephesians 5:16). The preacher is to set false teaching straight, rebuke sin, and lift up the discouraged. Two other qualifications are then added. The first denotes the manner and the second the method that Timothy should use—forbearance and teaching.

Verses 3, 4. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. What we teach matters; it must be sound doctrine. Our world clearly reveals the preference of many who want to hear only what they agree with, what they like, and what is popular. They want teachers who will “scratch” their itching ears. Every preacher of the gospel is under constant pressure to say what pleases the crowd. He must remember that he is “playing to an audience of one.”

Verse 5. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. An evangelist is simply one who tells the gospel to others (Acts 21:8; Ephesians 4:11). Paul’s instructions to Timothy in these two letters contain his duties. As Timothy serves, hardships will come. He is neither to seek them nor flee them. Instead, when they come he is to face them with courage and confidence in the Lord who has called him to help lead the church. |L
