The Uniform Lesson for December 7
Background & Commentary by Sam E. Stone

This quarter’s theme, “Human Commitment,” introduces us to various Bible characters who demonstrated this important quality. All four lessons in December are taken from the Gospel of Luke. Luke’s name does not appear in his Gospel, and it occurs only three times in the entire New Testament. A physician (Colossians 4:14), his biography of Jesus follows the form used by Greek historians.

In our studies, we will consider Mary, the mother of Jesus; Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist; the shepherds who came when Christ was born; and John the Baptist himself, as he prepared the way for the Messiah.

Today’s text contains Mary’s song of praise to the Lord, while she was at the home of her relative Elizabeth. The angel Gabriel had told Mary that she would give birth to God’s Son, the Messiah. After this, Mary made the 60-mile trip from her home in Nazareth down to Judea where Elizabeth lived. She was in her sixth month of pregnancy at the time. After she arrived, Elizabeth blessed her because Mary had trusted God that he would do exactly what he said (Luke 1:26-45—next Sunday’s lesson).

Mary responded with a beautiful song of praise to the Lord. It is sometimes called “The Magnificat” because of the first word in the Latin translation.

The song follows typical Hebrew parallelism, in which the same concept is repeated in different words. J. W. Shepard wrote, “Christianity was born in a burst of sacred song. It was fitting that the two women, who were to be mothers of the Christ and his forerunner, should be the first of the soloists.”

God’s Blessing/Luke 1:46-49

Verse 46. And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord. Mary’s song is similar to the one Hannah sang when God answered her prayers by giving her a son (1 Samuel 2:1-10). Mary praised God, just as his people had done in the past (see Psalm 34:3; 2 Samuel 7:26).

Verse 47. My spirit rejoices in God my Savior. In the later years of the Old Testament period, “Savior” was a term reserved for God himself. While it is used that way here, Luke also uses it as a title for Christ (see Luke 2:11). Mary clearly recognized that she needed a Savior.

Verse 48. He has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. Mary had no noble rank, no wealth, no earthly position. What she did have, however, was submissive faith in the Lord (see 1:38). She was content to be God’s obedient slave, just as she was when she first submitted to his call. God is no respecter of persons (Romans 2:11; 10:11-13). From now on all generations will call me blessed. Recognizing Mary’s faith and affirming how God honored it does not mean that she is to be worshiped, of course. There is never a hint of this in Scripture, despite what the Roman Catholic church teaches.

Verse 49. The Mighty One has done great things for me. Mary acknowledged that God is all-powerful (see Genesis 17:1; Revelation 1:8). All blessings come from him (James 1:17). Holy is his name. God revealed this truth to Israel many years before. Bible students have counted 30 words or phrases from the Old Testament that are contained in Mary’s song, as she praises the God of Israel.

God’s Mercy/Luke 1:50-53

Verse 50. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. Fear suggests proper respect and reverence for God and his power (see Psalm 111:10; Job 28:28). Just as an obedient child fears hurting the feelings of a parent by doing what is not approved, so God’s child has an appropriate fear of him. God’s mercy has been shown countless times over the centuries.

Verse 51. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm. His “arm” is a figure of speech that pictures God’s great power (compare Isaiah 53:1). He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. All who trust in human strength will fail, but the humble will be exalted by the Lord (Luke 14:11).

Verse 52. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. The rich and the royal are passed over by God, but he uses the humble to do his work (see 1 Corinthians 1:19-31). Jesus himself modeled this spirit (Philippians 2:6-9).

Verse 53. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. Mary uses powerful images to illustrate the Lord’s blessings on her and all who share her servant’s heart (see Psalm 107:9; Matthew 5:6; John 6:35).

God’s Help/Luke 1:54, 55

Verses 54, 55. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.” Despite the suffering endured by the people of Israel for many years, the Lord remained true to the promises he had made to Abraham and his children (Genesis 12:2; 22:16-18; Isaiah 41:8-10; Micah 7:20; Galatians 3:16). The hopes of the nation would be realized in Mary’s son, Jesus. Ours will be as well. |L
