The Uniform Lesson for February 22

This marks the final lesson in our 12-week series on “Human Commitment.” We have been introduced to various Bible characters (including both lesser-known and better-known people), all of whom demonstrated this important quality.

The prophet Isaiah lived some 700 years before Jesus. He proclaimed God’s message in the southern kingdom of Judah. His ministry began about the time King Uzziah died. Uzziah reigned from 792-740 and is generally considered a good king.

Isaiah 6 is one of the most familiar texts in the Old Testament. It is a favorite of preachers. Kyle Yates liked to emphasize: the woe of conviction (v. 5), the lo of cleansing (v. 7), and the go of service (v. 9). Although our printed text covers only the first eight verses, it will be helpful to read the entire chapter to get the gist of the message Isaiah was called upon to deliver.

Holy God/Isaiah 6:1-4

Verse 1. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Isaiah’s vision may have taken place in the temple at Jerusalem. It certainly portrayed the scene of the heavenly temple, however (Revelation 4:1-11). Scripture teaches that no person has seen God at any time (John 1:18). It appears that his presence was manifested in the temple through God the Son (compare Ezekiel 1:26; John 12:41). When his earthly king died, Isaiah saw his eternal king. The Lord appeared wearing a long, flowing robe (see Revelation 1:13).

Verses 2, 3. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. These winged creatures seem to have appeared in human form. (They are pictured having hands, feet, and voices.) Their ceaseless ministry is to praise the Lord and express his glory. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” By repeating “holy” three times, they were emphasizing God’s infinite holiness. God is set apart from all his creatures by his moral purity and his divine perfection (compare Hosea 11:9). It is appropriate for us to sing with Reginald Heber, “Holy, holy, holy! Tho’ the darkness hide Thee, Tho’ the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see. Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, in love, and purity.”

Verse 4. At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. Elsewhere we learn that the mercy seat became covered with a cloud of incense when the priest served there (Leviticus 16:13). In Isaiah’s vision of the blazing presence of God, smoke fills the temple. The scene is reminiscent of the time when the Lord came down at Mount Sinai (see Exodus 19:18, 19; 20:18, 19).

Sinful Man/Isaiah 6:5-7

Verse 5. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” Isaiah felt helpless. He said in effect, “I am doomed to die.” Being in the presence of the pure and holy God always affects mortals in this way. Note the three reasons Isaiah gives for his despair. He first acknowledged his own sinful speech and then that of his contemporaries. Seeing the Lord in his purity helped him realize his own unworthiness. Job described his condition in a similar way (Job 40:4). Isaiah’s lips may be mentioned specifically since sinful words would not be consistent coming from one who was speaking God’s prophetic message.

Verse 6. Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. God sent one of his angelic messengers to demonstrate both his mercy and grace to Isaiah. On the Day of Atonement coals of fire were taken into the Most Holy Place (Leviticus 16:12) to offer a sacrifice for sin. For Isaiah, as for us, God provides the cleansing he alone can give.

Verse 7. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” When Jeremiah was commissioned for his prophetic ministry, the Lord’s hand touched his mouth as well (Jeremiah 1:9). The same was true with Daniel (Daniel 10:16). Fire is seen as a purifier throughout Scripture (see Numbers 31:22, 23; Malachi 3:2; Matthew 3:11).

Willing Messenger/Isaiah 6:8

Verse 8. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” When God called Moses, Moses hesitated (Exodus 4:13). Isaiah didn’t! Instead, he reacted like King David. When David experienced the joy and relief of having his sins forgiven, he immediately made himself available to serve in whatever way the Lord chose (see Psalm 51:12-15). Although Isaiah did not know all that would be expected of him, he demonstrated full commitment to do anything his Lord might ask! |L
