The Uniform Lesson for March 29

This month’s lessons have taken five well-known passages from Ezekiel suggesting “The Promise of New Life.” Next month we will consider passages from Luke and Acts, then study Ephesians in May. All of these texts explore the creative nature of Christ as it affects the world in which we live.

Ezekiel was transported with many others from Israel into Babylonian captivity. There he faithfully presented God’s message to the exiles.

In chapters 40-48, Ezekiel describes future worship in the perfect temple of God. Some 15 years before this, the temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed. The Jewish exiles needed to remember their eternal home and the perfect temple in the New Jerusalem.

Henry Halley calls today’s text “one of Ezekiel’s grandest passages.” It pictures the influences of Christ, coming out of Jerusalem and flowing in an ever-widening, ever-deepening stream, blessing the entire world.

The Source of the River/Ezekiel 47:1-2

Verses 1, 2. The angel-guide took Ezekiel back to the temple’s entrance. This guide appears frequently in 40:1–46:24 showing him the temple. The focus of Ezekiel’s vision now turns outward across the promised land. The water, coming from the temple itself, sent its life-giving substance throughout the land. The symbolism of having the river’s origin at the threshold of the sanctuary is noteworthy. God is always the source of life in a world thirsting for truth (John 4:14; 7:37-39; Ephesians 5:26; Revelation 7:17; 21:6; 22:1,17).

The Depth and Width of the River/Ezekiel 47:3-5

Verses 3-5. He measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. One thousand cubits equals about 1,500 feet. With no tributary adding to the flow, the river had a miraculous increase. The water that was first trickling from the sanctuary soon became a flowing stream, then a flood. Joel described such a time in his prophecy (3:18).

The Power of the River/Ezekiel 47:6-12

Verses 6, 7. Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river. Notice the similarity both to the Garden of Eden (Genesis 1-3) and Heaven (Revelation 22:1-4).

Verse 8. He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Sea. Where it empties into the Sea, the water there becomes fresh.” Looking at a map of the Holy Land, it is easy to envision what the prophet describes. The mighty river will flow down through the arid desert region between Jerusalem and Jericho, running on down to the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth (1,300 feet below sea level). The concentration of salt and other minerals in the water (24-26 percent) is far greater than what is found in the ocean (4-6 percent). Because of this, no fish and no aquatic life can exist there.

Verse 9. Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live. Changing the Dead Sea’s water to make it fresh shows the great power of this healing river. Lamar Cooper said it well: “With the life-giving water from God the barren becomes fruitful, the dry becomes nourished, the empty becomes filled, the bitter becomes sweet, the unhealthy is healed, and the dead is made alive” (vv. 6-8; Luke 7:21-23).

Verse 10. Fishermen will stand along the shore; from En Gedi to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets. The fish will be of many kinds—like the fish of the Great Sea. In an area where they could never fish before, these anglers will find the water teeming with all kinds of fish. The Great Sea means the Mediterranean.

Verse 11. But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt. Salt deposits could still be useful for the people.

Verse 12. Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.” The effects of the water may be seen in every aspect of life. Its life-giving power is understandable since it flows directly from the sanctuary of God. Later Jesus spoke about the healing waters of God (see John 4:14; 7:37-38).
