The Uniform Lesson for May 3

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians was written around a.d. 60 and contains helpful teaching on key Christian doctrines. The expression “in Christ” in our lesson title is most appropriate. This expression or its equivalent occurs at least 10 times in the opening paragraph of the epistle (1:1-14). Jesus is the foundation of the church, the basis of our hope, the rock of our salvation, and the source of every spiritual blessing. For the family of God, everything centers “in Christ.”

One Bible teacher put it like this: “Christians not only have faith in him; their life is in him. As the root in the soil, the branch in the vine, the fish in the sea, the bird in the air, so the place of the Christian’s life is in Christ.”

Chosen/Ephesians 1:3-6

God . . . has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ (v. 3). The believer is pictured as already seated with Christ in Heaven (see 2:6). Heaven is the Christian’s actual home (Philippians 3:20). We live as strangers on earth for now, while we anticipate our heavenly home (Ephesians 2:19).

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight (v. 4). The Bible teaches both the sovereignty of God and the free will of man. As we try to understand this, neither concept can be allowed to exclude the other.

R. C. Foster told about a man who had a strange dream. Standing in Heaven he saw a large arch through which thousands of people were entering from earth. On the arch were inscribed these words—“The elect of God.” The man then walked to the other side and looked at the arch from earth’s side. There he saw inscribed—”Whosoever will may come.” Foster concluded, “The whosoever will are the elect; whosoever won’t are the non-elect.”

No one can blame God if he or she fails to become a Christian. The Lord has made it possible for all who accept and obey Christ to be adopted into his family and be saved. God’s intention is that his family be “holy and blameless.” Walter L. Liefeld observed, “Holiness is the result—not the basis—of God’s choosing.”

Redeemed/Ephesians 1:7-12

Paul next discusses our redemption. This was a familiar concept in the first century. The Old Testament made provision for the redemption of property or people that had passed from their original owner to another (Leviticus 25:25-27, 47-49; Numbers 18:15). The people of Israel themselves were a redeemed people—brought back first from Egypt, then Babylon. By redeeming them, God made them twice his people (Exodus 15:13; Deuteronomy 7:8; Isaiah 48:20; 52:9).

Speaking of Christians, Paul refers to our being set free because Jesus paid the price of our redemption with his blood. Sin requires a blood sacrifice (Hebrews 9:22; see Leviticus 17:11). The payment for our sins was made when our Lord shed his blood for us on the cross. Sinners can only be freed from the bondage of sin by Christ’s death. All of the blessings mentioned here (Ephesians 1:7-10) came by the riches of God’s grace (see also Romans 8:32).

The mystery of his will (Ephesians 1:9) refers to what had been previously hidden, but is now revealed through Christ’s coming. The plan of God became clear after Jesus was raised from the dead (compare Romans 11:25; Ephesians 3:3-4:9; 5:32; 6:19). All of the other blessings received by the family of God come as the result of our redemption in Christ. Under his rule and authority (1:10), every phase of life finds meaning and fulfillment (Colossians 1:15-20). He is the head over all things in the church.

In verse 12 the apostle adds, in order that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be for the praise of his glory. Here he speaks about Jewish Christians. Then he quickly mentions Gentile believers. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation (v. 13). Without hope before, the Gentiles now are adopted into God’s eternal family (see 2:12),

Sealed/Ephesians 1:13, 14

Elsewhere the apostle affirmed that faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). First we hear; next we believe. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit (v. 13). In New Testament times a person’s seal was used to show that the message was something important. In the case of a letter, for example, it could also demonstrate its authenticity. Further, it provided a guarantee that the thing sealed had been carried intact.

The Holy Spirit is the Christian’s seal. He is God’s proof to us of the genuineness of what we have believed (Romans 8:15-17). The Spirit is promised to every believer who repents and is baptized (Acts 2:38). The Spirit is a deposit, a down payment, assuring us that everything God has promised his children will be ours in due time (see 2 Corinthians 1:22; Romans 8:23). As members of God’s family, we have been chosen, redeemed, and sealed by him. |L
