The Uniform Lesson for May 10

In Ephesians 2 Paul continues the theme of chapter 1 (gratitude for all God’s blessings in Christ), expanding on it. William Hendriksen writes, “The apostle begins to show that ‘in Christ’ the palace of salvation has opened its gates to all . . . to Gentiles as well as to Jews. When Jesus died on the cross the wall between these two formerly hostile groups came tumbling down, never to be re-erected.”

Past Predicament/Ephesians 2:1-3

Previously the Jews were considered dead in (their) transgressions and sin (2:1; see Romans 5:12; 6:2). All who disobey like Adam will suffer Adam’s punishment—death (Genesis 2:17). This is not simply physical death (the separation of the soul from the body), but rather spiritual death (the separation of the soul from God). Such is the destiny that awaits all who do not obey God’s authority.

Such authority is described in three ways—its worldly power (when you followed the ways of this world), its spiritual nature (the ruler of the kingdom of the air), and its activity in men’s lives (the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient). The ruler of the kingdom of the air refers to Satan (see John 16:11).

All of us also lived among them at one time includes the Jews (v. 3; Romans 2:1-9; 3:9, 23). The Gentiles had no monopoly on gratifying the cravings of (the) sinful nature. Everyone in the world therefore falls under the judgment of God (Romans 3:19).

Present Life/Ephesians 2:4-6

The Christian then passes from death to life. God makes the difference. Someone wrote, “Mercy pities, grace pardons.” God’s love and mercy combined to make us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions (v. 5).

God removed the barrier of sin that separates lost mankind from him, making us now alive in Christ (Romans 5:8). Because Christ was raised from the dead, his followers are resurrected from death in sin to enjoy new life in Christ. This is pictured in Christian baptism (Romans 6:1-14). It is by grace you have been saved, Paul explains (v. 5). The result is that God raised us up with Christ, and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus (v. 6). Although we still live on the earth for a little time, we are now new creatures. Our eternal destiny is with our Lord in Heaven.

The New Testament speaks of salvation as a present (see 1 Corinthians 1:18, 15:2; 2 Corinthians 2:15) and a future experience (Romans 5:9). Salvation includes deliverance from the power of sin now, but eventually it includes deliverance from the very presence of sin.

The late W. R. Walker was asked, “Are you saved?” He replied, “I have been saved, I am being saved, and I hope to be saved.” Then he explained, “When I accepted and obeyed Christ, I was saved from my past sins. Even now as a Christian, however, I slip and sin from time to time. I confess those sins to the Lord and he forgives them, cleansing me by Jesus’ blood, so I am being saved. One day when this life is over and I stand before him ‘faithful unto death,’ I will experience the fullness of salvation in Heaven.”

Future Promise/Ephesians 2:7-10

Paul adds, “In order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus” (v. 7). The “coming ages” seems to be a general reference to all of the future (compare 1:21; Matthew 12:32; Mark 10:30).

The apostle then repeats the expression—it is by grace you have been saved (v. 5). Here he adds through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (v. 8). A. T. Robertson explains, “Grace is God’s part, faith ours.” Then Paul affirms, and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. The “it” refers to our salvation. No one can earn salvation; it is God’s gift (compare Romans 3:21-31).

Paul further clarifies, not by works, so that no one can boast (v. 9). Even if one tries to do all that is required by the Old Testament law, he is destined to fail (Romans 3:20, 28). We can take no credit for our salvation. The old hymn “Rock of Ages” had it right: “Not the labors of my hands can fulfill Thy law’s demands; Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone, Thou must save, and Thou alone.”

At the same time, the purpose of the Christian is to do good works. We are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus for this very reason (v. 10). By our thoughts, words, and actions God can fulfill his plan for our lives, through our “new works in grace.” |L
