The Uniform Lesson for November 1

In this quarter’s study of “Covenant Communities,” we studied first some Old Testament leaders of God’s people. Next (from Mark’s Gospel) we considered the invitation Jesus offered people in his day to become part of the community. This month we will consider what God expects of the New Testament community, the church. These lessons are based on 1 and 2 Peter.

Most Bible scholars believe the apostle Peter wrote this letter around 63-64 A.D. He addressed both Jewish and Gentile Christians scattered throughout Asia Minor (1 Peter 1:1, 2). The people were undergoing persecutions (see 1:6, 7), and these would only get worse. He wrote while in “Babylon” (see vv. 5:13), possibly a symbolic name for Rome. Silas assisted him (5:12), perhaps in writing as well as delivering the message.

A Separated Life/1 Peter 1:13-16

Peter follows his salutation of praise to God with a series of commands for believers. Therefore, prepare your minds for action (v. 13). The original language pictures a man pulling up his long garment and tucking it inside his broad belt so he would be ready for quick action. We might say, “Roll up your sleeves and go to work!” Be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed (v.13). Alan Stibbs observed, “It is typical of the way in which the Epistles always base ethical demands on doctrinal exposition.”

The apostle next contrasts the lifestyle of the world with God’s expectation for the Christian. Do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance (v. 14; compare Romans 12:2). Instead, we are to be holy, just as God is holy (see Leviticus 11:44). The Christian is to live a life marked by separation from sin.

A Tremendous Cost/1 Peter 1:17-21

God is our Father (v. 17) and we are to be his obedient children in this world (v. 14). As the old gospel song says, “This world is not my home, I’m just a passing through.” As strangers here, we are to live in reverent fear (v. 17). The cost of our redemption was the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect (v. 19). When Peter spoke like this about Jesus, perhaps his mind went back to two Old Testament pictures—Isaiah 53 as the Suffering Servant and Exodus 12:5 as the Passover Lamb.

Because our salvation was purchased at this great price, it calls for us to live holy lives before God. We must be consecrated to him. The word for “holy” in the Greek is hagios, meaning different from ordinary things (compare 2 Peter 3:11-14.)

William Barclay notes, “Sometimes we tend to think of God as first Creator and then Redeemer. We think of God as having created the world, and then, when things went wrong, finding a way to rescue the world through Jesus Christ. But here we have the tremendous vision of a God who was Redeemer before he was Creator.” He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake (v. 20). For this reason, we can place our complete faith and hope in God (v. 21).

A Fervent Love/1 Peter 1:22-25

Salvation comes by obeying the truth. We must cooperate with God as he purifies us. After Saul of Tarsus came to believe in Christ and repent of what he had done wrong, Ananias told him, “What are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name” (Acts 22:16). There is something for you to do. No one can save himself, but neither will God save anyone who doesn’t want to be saved (compare James 4:8; 1 John 3:3). Only those who obey his commands are assured salvation (see Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38, 39).

Peter goes on to remind them that more than holiness is expected of the believer. True love for others must characterize the Christian’s life as well. It must be “unfeigned” (King James Version), the real thing. No other kind of love is worth having (1 Thessalonians 4:9; Hebrews 13:1; 2 Peter 1:7). Love one another deeply, from the heart (v. 22), he tells them.

Peter then reminds them that they have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring Word of God. (v. 23). We are begotten by God’s Word (James 1:18; John 1:13). Divine truth brings life to the soul. The Holy Spirit works through the Word to effect salvation (Titus 3:5). To make his point, Peter cites a quotation from Isaiah 40:6-8, affirming that God’s Word will endure forever. This is the very gospel message that had been preached to them (v. 25). |L
