Golden Oldies

By Kelly Carr

As we continue in our generations series, this week we are hearing from the “golden oldies” crowd. Don’t worry, we won’t ask you to raise your hands and state your age and health status. You can silently affirm if you fall in this category.

First, I begin by stating to you oldest generation Christians—thank you. You have worked hard, persevered, and set an example for those of us who follow you. Thank you for your faithfulness to Jesus, whether you’ve served him your whole life or have begun to follow his ways in your later years. Either way, we see the choices you have made and we are learning from them.

Second, to all you readers who are not in this oldest generation—let’s really read and pay attention this week. The Lookout is sharing stories from seniors who tell us about how they are treated, what goals they still want to accomplish, and how they are passionate about continuing to serve in the church. There is sometimes a tendency in our society to pay attention to the new, the now, the young, the fast. Let’s not overlook the senior saints among us. Let’s stop and listen. Let’s learn. They have a lot to teach us.

Third, a note to all of us from all generations—let’s spend more time together. Sure, it’s easy and most comfortable to spend time with people who share things in common with us, and that is often people who are our age. But when we step outside of our comfort zone, we are blessed. Truth be told—I think we are the only ones who feel awkward. Everyone else gets excited when someone from a different generation (older or younger) desires to spend time with us. The church will only benefit when all generations serve together, worship beside each other, and spend time deepening our relationships with one another.
