Where You Live for March 13, 2016—Questions and Activities for Small Groups

By Michael C. Mack

1. What one object do you own that you would be extremely sad if you lost?

Read Mark 10:17-31.

2. Which word would you choose to describe the man who ran up to Jesus?

• Reverent

• Obedient

• Materialistic

• Shallow

• Misguided

• Foolish

How does this word apply to him?

3. “Jesus looked at him and loved him.” What does this say about the man? About Jesus?

4. Jesus knew that this young man could not truly follow Jesus while his money still owned him (see Matthew 6:19-21, 24). Here’s a tough question, but try to respond honestly and transparently: What still owns you—and potentially keeps you from being a more fully committed follower of Jesus?

5. Another way to think of this question: If Jesus told you to give up something to follow him, what would make your face fall?

6. Salvation is impossible for humans to attain on our own, but with God all things are possible. How did Jesus fulfill Mark 10:27 through his death and resurrection?

7. The young man’s problem wasn’t his money; it was his priorities (Matthew 6:33). How would his life have changed if he had done what Jesus told him (see vv. 29-30)?

8. Jesus didn’t run after the man, beg him to come back, or negotiate with him. He doesn’t do that. He simply stands at the door and knocks. He doesn’t push us, but he invites us and draws us to him. He loves us enough to give us free will in our response to him. How is Jesus inviting you to respond to his love for you today? Be specific.
